Theme: Netarhat System: Lesson for Creativity, Innovation and Manufacturing in India
One of the important aspects of Netarhat Education System was focus on working with hand and valuing the dignity of labour. This started from Ashram(student hostel having 20Â25 students and a teacher with family), where all the work like cleaning dishes, cleaning toilets, sweeping floors etc was done by inmates by turn. No one was an exception to this system. Another aspect was that each student was trained to make things out of wood in “Kashthashala”, out of metals in “Dhatushala” and had to work in the agricultural field. It was customary to refer to each person with respect and call those doing physical service as “Dhobi Jee”, “Mochi Jee” etc.Â
We feel that Indian social cultural and education system creates an apathy to working with hands. This results in students avoiding labs in schools and colleges, very little hardware-based innovation and lack of trained persons wanting to work with hardcore engineering and on shop floors. This discussion would focus on these aspects as it is ignored in most of the discussions on creativity, innovation and manufacturing.
